Did You Pivot to Avoid Business Disruption?

{3 minutes to read}  As the summer breeze began to stiffen and schools reopened, I anticipated drastic and ongoing changes to business generally. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, I’d been concerned about the future of the retail fashion and commercial real estate industries, just a couple of my practice areas. Some businesses would have been disrupted by new technology anyway, as noted by Richard Kestenbaum in a recent Forbes article regarding Apple’s recent U.S. patent filings relevant to the retail eyewear business. Other businesses, such as the travel industry, seemed indefinitely stalled on account of the global pandemic.

Despite the Black Swan event of 2020, which halted business for a chunk of the year, I’ve heard many inspirational stories of Women-Owned Businesses taking a hard pivot. These adaptable women demonstrate resilience in the face of significant disruption. Adaptability is a key component to success.

I was in a feel-good vibe, so I decided to share one of these success stories with you:

Nancy Vargas, CEO, DH2 (https://dh2limo.com)

Nancy Vargas is the Chief Executive Officer at DH2 Chauffeured Transportation (“DH2”), which is MWBE Certified with The City of NY; The State of NY; The Port Authority of NY and NJ; and Nassau County. DH2 provides ground transportation services, including Airport Service, Corporate and Sporting Events, and Wine Tours.

Nancy has been in business for over 25 years, but when we met over Zoom in the summer of 2020, her fleet of vehicles (including Sedans, SUVs, Sprinter Vans and Buses) were essentially grounded like the airlines. So, she and her partner put their thinking caps on. They updated DH2’s website to include detailed information about the Safety Protocols taken to keep riders safe, and figured out how to engage and maintain their employees by expanding their service offerings.

The Hard Pivot

During the pandemic, DH2 supported the community through meal delivery, partnering with Nassau County’s Meals on Wheels Program, and since June 2020, DH2 provides Mobile Detailing Services in the Tri-State area. These Mobile Detailing Services are unique because DH2 brings to your home or place of business the water, water hose, Eco-Friendly Chemicals, a portable vacuum and all other equipment needed to clean and wash the exterior and interior, vacuum the rugs, shine the tires, spray wax, and provide your vehicle(s) with extra TLC. DH2 will detail your vehicle(s) as they do their own first-class Fleet.
